Handmade gifts for weddings and new homes

A handmade gift is remembered because it was obviously chosen rather than grabbed. Everything here is made to order, which is the appeal and also the limit — it needs ordering ahead, because clay has to dry and paint has to cure. This page is about what suits which occasion, what to avoid, how far in advance to ask, and how to get the personalisation right.

Handmade tea light holders with pearl and kundan borders, made in pairs

What makes a good housewarming gift

The useful test is whether it will still be in the house in ten years. Consumables are kind but gone; a piece made for that particular home tends to stay.

A name plate is the strongest version of this, because it is literally made for them and nobody else can own it. It is also the first thing every visitor sees, which means it gets noticed in a way a vase on a shelf does not. Pieces start at ₹700, so it is not a question of budget so much as of notice.

If you do not know the couple's taste well, a tea light set or candle plate is safer than a large wall piece — smaller, easier to place, and it does not commit them to giving up a wall.

The gifts that fail are the ones that assume a decision the recipient has not made yet: a large piece in a specific colour for a room they have not finished, or something sized for a wall you have never seen.

Choosing by occasion

Griha pravesh and new homes. A Ganesha name plate or a mandala piece for the entrance carries the traditional association and is genuinely used rather than stored. If the home is new and still unfurnished, lean towards the entrance rather than the living room — the entrance is decided early, the living room scheme often is not.

Weddings. A personalised name plate with both names is the obvious choice, and it is the one that gets photographed. It also solves the problem that the couple may not yet have a home to decorate.

Engagements. Smaller and less committal than a wedding gift. A tea light pair or a small mandala works without presuming anything about a future home.

Anniversaries. A piece dated or named for the couple, or a replacement for something they already have and love. This is the occasion where asking them directly is better than surprising them.

Diwali and festivals. Tea light holders and candle plates are the natural festival gift, and they are made in pairs and sets rather than singly.

Corporate and client gifting. Sets of identical or near-identical small pieces, ordered well ahead. See the bulk section below, because the lead time is the whole conversation.

A new baby or a new room. Smaller, softer palettes, and nothing that needs a fixing above a cot.

Weddings in more detail

Madhubani work is worth considering where the meaning matters. The tradition is a language of symbols: fish for fertility and good fortune, the lotus for purity, and the kohbar for the marriage chamber. If you want the motif chosen on purpose rather than decoratively, say so and I will choose it deliberately.

A name plate with both names is the most requested wedding piece. Send the exact spelling of both names as they write them themselves, including whether they use a hyphen, an ampersand or neither.

If the couple are moving abroad after the wedding, say so. Size and weight change what is sensible to ship, and a smaller framed piece travels far better than a large unframed panel.

Tea light holders and candle plates work well as a set for a larger group gift, where several people are contributing and nobody wants to coordinate a single expensive item.

Griha pravesh and entrance pieces

The entrance is the one wall in a new home that gets decided immediately, which makes it the safest place to aim a gift.

A Ganesha name plate carries the traditional association for a new home and is used daily rather than displayed occasionally.

Round mandala name plates suit a door or the wall beside it, and they read clearly at close range, which is how an entrance piece is actually seen.

If you want hanging bells, say so at the start. They change how the piece is built and balanced, not just how it looks.

Festival season, and why timing matters most here

Festival season is the busiest period of the year in this studio, and it is the time when ordering late genuinely does mean missing the date.

Tea lights and candle plates are the natural Diwali gift because they are used on the night rather than put away.

Sets of 2, 4 or 6 are more useful than single pieces for festival gifting, because they get distributed across a home.

Ask early rather than in the final fortnight. The constraint is drying time between layers, and no amount of goodwill shortens it.

Personalising it properly

Name plates can carry a name, a pair of names, a house name or a number, in your choice of colours and with mirror, dot or Ganesha detailing.

Tell me the exact spelling you want, including how they write it themselves. A gift with a misspelled name is worse than no gift, and I would rather ask twice than guess once.

Think about the script. A name set in English, in Devanagari, or in both changes the layout and the space the design has to work with.

If the plate is for a door with a number already on it, send a photo. Matching or deliberately contrasting with what is there is a decision worth making rather than discovering.

Budget, honestly

Within India, pieces start at ₹700, and gifts going abroad start at ₹3,500. The price above that depends on size, how much mirror and clay detailing is involved, and whether it is framed.

For a small token gift, a single tea light holder or a small plate sits at the lower end, close to the ₹700 floor.

For a main gift from one person, a name plate or a modest wall piece is the usual range.

For a group gift or a significant occasion, a larger wall piece or a matched set is where the money goes furthest, because the work scales better than the materials do.

You see a firm price before anything is made, so there is no risk of a surprise at the end.

What I would not gift

A large wall piece for someone whose room you have never seen. The odds of getting both size and palette right are poor.

Anything clay for a home you know has a damp problem, or for a recipient who will almost certainly hang it in a bathroom because that is where they want it.

A heavily personalised piece for someone who moves often, unless the personalisation is the point.

Something rushed to hit a date. If the timeline is not realistic I will say so, and a late gift that is right beats an on-time gift that cracks.

Ordering in time

Every piece is made to order, and each layer has to dry fully before the next goes on. That drying is what sets the timeline and it cannot be hurried without the piece cracking later.

Tell me the date you need it for at the start, not at the end. It is the single most useful thing you can say, and it changes what I will recommend.

If the date is not realistic I will say so rather than rush it and send you something that fails in a year.

If you are late and the date is immovable, say that too. There is usually a smaller or simpler piece that can be done properly in the time, and that is a better answer than a compromised version of the original idea.

Packing, presentation and sending it directly

Pieces can be sent directly to the recipient rather than to you. Say so when you order and I will pack it to be given rather than to be unpacked and re-wrapped.

Everything is packed to survive transit rather than to look good in a shop — relief work with mirrors needs protection more than it needs ribbon.

If you want a message included, send the exact wording.

Pieces ship across India and internationally. Shipping cost and timeline depend on the size of the piece and the destination, and are confirmed per order before payment.

Bulk and corporate gifting

Larger orders for corporate gifting, wedding parties or festival sets are possible, and they need the most notice of anything here, because everything is still made by one pair of hands.

Message me with the quantity and the date first. The quantity decides whether the date is achievable at all, and that is the conversation to have before anyone discusses design.

Expect some variation between pieces in a set. They are hand-made, not stamped, and near-identical is achievable while truly identical is not. For most gifting this is the appeal; if it is a problem for you, say so early.

Simpler designs scale better than intricate ones. If the quantity is large, the right move is usually a cleaner design made well rather than a complex one made hurriedly.

Sending a gift abroad

Pieces are shipped internationally as well as across India, and a gift going overseas needs thinking about differently from one going across a city.

Smaller and framed travels better than larger and unframed. If the choice is between a big panel and a well-made smaller piece, distance argues for the smaller one.

Tell me the destination country at the start, not after the design is agreed. It affects what I would recommend making, how it is packed, and how long it needs.

Gifts ship from the Gurugram studio to the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, the UAE and across Europe, which covers most of where family tends to be.

For gifts going outside India, prices start at ₹3,500, roughly US$37, €33 or £28 at October 2026 rates, with the exact figure confirmed in your quote.

Delivery is charged on top and varies by destination country, so a gift to Toronto and the same gift to Dubai will not cost the same to send. You see the delivery figure with the quote.

Shipping cost and timeline depend on the size of the piece and the destination, and are confirmed per order before payment. Customs charges, where they apply, are set by the destination country and are the recipient's to pay unless we have agreed otherwise in advance — and since the rules in both the USA and the EU changed during 2025 and 2026, ask me what currently applies rather than assuming. A customs bill arriving with a gift is the one outcome worth paying attention to avoid.

Questions worth asking before you order

Do they have a wall for it, or are they still unpacking? If the home is new, aim at the entrance rather than the living room.

Do you know how they spell their name — exactly, as they write it? Ask someone if you are not certain.

Is there a date this has to land on, or is close enough acceptable? Be honest with me about which, because it changes what I will take on.

Is anyone else giving them something similar? Two name plates is an awkward outcome and a single message prevents it.

Will it be opened in front of people? If so, say so and I will pack it to be handed over rather than to be unwrapped carefully with scissors.

Why handmade, for a gift

A handmade piece carries the thing a bought one cannot: somebody spent hours on it, and the hours are visible in the work.

Because each mirror is set by hand and each raised line laid individually, no two pieces are identical even in the same design. The recipient owns the only one.

It also ages differently. Mass-produced décor tends to look dated within a few years because it was designed to a trend; these traditions have held their form for centuries and do not date in the same way.

And it comes from a named person in a known place — Gurugram, Sector 67 — rather than from an anonymous warehouse. For a gift, provenance is part of what you are giving.

Questions before ordering

How far in advance should I order a handmade gift?
As early as you can, and tell me the date at the start. Every piece is made to order and each layer dries before the next goes on, which is what sets the timeline. Around festivals and wedding season, ordering late genuinely does mean missing the date.
What is the best gift for a griha pravesh?
An entrance piece — a Ganesha name plate or a mandala for the door or the wall beside it. The entrance is decided early in a new home, so it is the safest wall to aim at, and the piece gets used daily rather than stored.
Can you send the gift directly to the recipient?
Yes. Tell me when you order and I will pack it to be given rather than to be unpacked and re-wrapped. Pieces are sent across India and internationally.
Can a name plate have two names on it, for a wedding?
Yes, and it is one of the most requested wedding gifts. Send the exact spelling of both names as they write them themselves, including whether they use a hyphen, an ampersand or neither.
What is a good gift if I do not know their taste?
A tea light set or candle plate. They are smaller, easy to place, and they do not commit the recipient to giving up a wall. A large wall piece is a better gift when you know the room.
Can I have the name written in Hindi or another script?
Yes. Tell me at the start, because the script changes the layout and how much space the rest of the design has. A name set in both English and Devanagari is also possible.
Do you take bulk or corporate gifting orders?
Yes, with notice. Everything is made by one person, so quantity and date decide what is possible. Message me with both before we discuss design. Expect near-identical rather than identical pieces.
What do handmade gifts cost?
Within India, pieces start at ₹700, and gifts going abroad start at ₹3,500. The price above that depends on size, how much mirror and clay detailing is involved, and whether it is framed. You see a firm price before anything is made.
Can you send a gift to the USA, the UK or Europe?
Yes. Gifts ship from the Gurugram studio to the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, the UAE and across Europe, and can go directly to the recipient rather than to you. Tell me the destination country at the start, because it changes what I would recommend making and how long to allow.
Does the price include delivery?
No. Delivery is charged on top of the price of the piece, and it depends on the destination country as well as the size and weight of what is being sent. You get the delivery cost quoted alongside the price before you commit, so there is nothing to discover later.
Will the recipient be charged customs on a gift?
Possibly — customs duty and import VAT are set by the destination country, not by the studio, and the rules in both the USA and the EU changed during 2025 and 2026. Tell me where it is going and I will tell you what currently applies, so a customs bill does not arrive with the present.
Can you gift wrap it?
Pieces are packed to survive transit first, because relief work with mirrors needs protection more than presentation. Tell me it is a gift and I will pack it to be handed over, and include a message if you send me the wording.
